A self-guided program to learn about education created by three young professionals working in education.

What is it?

This is an outline and syllabus of a self-directed “masters” program to study US K-12 education.

It was created by three young professionals who have each worked in education and were excited about the possibility of creating their own curriculum and “masters” to learn more about the field.

Why not a traditional MA in Education?

Why did we choose to create this Self-Guided Masters in Education instead of getting a traditional MA in Education from an established university?

There are a few clear advantages to studying a self-directed curriculum:

  1. Learning tailored to our goals: With this self-guided curriculum, we have more freedom and flexibility in terms of what we learn. We can focus on what we want to learn the most.

  2. Learning at much lower costs: Most traditional Masters in Education tuition run in the range of $40,000 to $50,000 per academic year. On the other hand, the cost of the books we read and site visits we conducted came closer to $1,000.

  3. Becoming autodidacts: In past years, one could make the argument that the best ideas were still locked up inside university campuses. To access them, one had to enroll as a student. However, information is now abundant and easily accessible online. Now one can learn just as much, if not more, outside of universities. We want to build our own learning habits to take advantage of the Information Age, developing our autodidactical muscles rather than relying on formal curricula and grades to motivate ourselves.
